Demi Moore Famously Had Liposuction

Demi Moore reinvented herself and bagged hot younger guy Ashton Kutcher thanks to a bit of help from Liposuction and millions of women around the world have used it for a quick fix to excess fat. Female First look at the truth about lipo and whether it really is as good as it seems.

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure which removes excess fatty deposits from under the skin using suction. It can help sculpt and define the figure.

Cosmetic surgeon Dr Andrea Marando believes that careful thought and preparation is essential for successful liposuction “You first have to determine the shape of the body that you want to give back to the patient and it is important to try if possible to see photographs of the patient before she put the weight on or before she had the pregnancy to know exactly what she had in mind.”

The timing of liposuction is also important: “The patient has to have a stable weight, it is not a quick fix. Also it is not a good idea to have lipo in June because you want to go on holiday the first or the following month,” says Dr Marando.

How Is It Done?

A liposuction procedure can be carried out while a patient is under local anaesthetic. The operation usually involves the surgeon making a small incision in a particular area of the body and then inserting a narrow tube called a cannula underneath the skin. A vacuum is then used to suck out excess fatty deposits.

The cannula is pushed and pulled in and out of the skin in order to break down the fat cells so they can be easily suctioned away.

The Risks

If liposuction goes smoothly the only side effect is a bit of bruising and swelling which usually goes within a week or so.

However, as with any type of surgery there is always the risk that things will go wrong!

The biggest risk with all cosmetic surgery is the risk of infection. Any operation that involves cutting into your skin opens the body to all kinds of bugs and germs that it wouldn't normally come in contact with. A reputable surgeon will obviously operate in a sterile environment but it's after the operation is complete that most people contract infections. Infections can cause prolonged swelling, redness and even permanent scarring.

Other risks include punctured organs from the movement of the cannula, tissue damage, irregular skin contour or uneven shape and in rare instances liposuction can cause thromboembolism including pulmonary embolism which can cause sudden death.

The Celebs

Demi Moore is the most well known liposuction fan after she combated the signs of a woman heading into her 40s by spending a reported £200,000 having her body remodelled- £16,000 of this was on liposuction on her thighs, hips and stomach.

Before and After

Other celebrities who are believed to have had a bit of suction treatment include Cher and comedienne Roseanne Barr. Liposuction is much harder to spot than other forms of surgery so telling who has had it done can be difficult- but isn't that the result we want?

Is It Worth It?

“The effects of liposuction are permanent as long as the patient has constant weight,” says Dr Marando, “So to have liposuction now and then to have twins next month might not be ideal.”

So unlike some other cosmetic procedures you should not have to revist your surgeon to have liposuction on the same area. It is designed to just be a quick fix solution. However it is still a major operation with all the risks of surgery so ideally other methods should be explored first.

Diet and exercise are still the best way to lose weight but we all have those stubborn areas of fat that refuse to leave us so sometimes extra measures need to be taken. Keep your eyes on Female First this month as we bring you the alternatives to cosmetic procedures over the coming weeks.
