There's nothing like a red lipstick at Christmas. For decades it's been the staple colour of any women's make-up collection, but now that nudes rule the roost, it's becoming quite a scary colour to pull off. Even so, we'll always have a place in our hearts for a red lippie, and here are just a few of our favourites:
1. Mac - Ruby Woo
Probably the most loved of three shades including Russion Red and Lady Danger, Ruby Woo has been favoured by myriad celebrities including Sia, Rita Ora and Rihanna. The latter even created her own limited edition version called Riri Woo back in 2013, which unsurprisingly sold out within hours.
2. Bésame Cosmetics Classic Color Lipstick - 1946 Red Velvet
This one is a carefully constructed replica of a shade from 1946; all the shades in the collection are vintage era colours, and as red lipstick was a standard day colour for women in the 40s, this has been created for daily use. Since its inception, it's made cameo appearances on dressing tables in The Artist, Mad Men and American Horror Story: Freak Show. It was most iconically used on Marvel's Agent Carter.
3. Dior Rouge Dior - 999
This one is still going strong over 70 years since it appeared on the first Christian Dior show. It's evolved from 9 to 999, which is appropriate given that it's got "danger" written all over it. Watch out people, this shade may just be too hot to handle.
4. Nars Semi Matte Lipstick - Jungle Red
Known to all Pretty Little Liars fans as Alison DiLaurentis' favourite shade, this one has a warm tone with a semi-matte finish. An absolute cult classic that tops even Dragon Girl and Heat Wave.
5. Giorgio Armani Rouge d'Armani - 400
Legend has it that Giorgio Armani created this shade back in the day as the "perfect" red that would suit everyone. Whether or not that's true is open for discussion though it looks undeniably fantastic on blondes. It's also elegantly packaged, long-lasting and beautifully moisturising.
6. Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour - Pirate
With its blueish hues, this one is great for olive skin and yellow undertones. It's not your classic scarlet but it's also not too dark if it's your first venture into deeper tones. Gotta love the French.
7. Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lipcolor - Red Revival
Nothing about burlesque star Dita Von Teese is cheap, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have a soft spot for budget brands like Maybelline. She loves Red Revival and this lippie is an absolute steal with its flawless pigment and soft application. The burgundy colour and the cream satin finish is truly seductive.
