Don't suffer with sunburn this summer, take care of your skin

With Summer finally arriving there is no doubt that everyone is outside catching a long overdue tan. After putting all those hours in to get the perfect sun-kissed look, nobody likes to glance in the mirror to find they’re glowing red and sporting those unattractive tan lines. Here are a few simple tips to keep your tan looking bronzed not burnt.

Burning can often follow with the dreaded peeling problem. The number one rule to maintain your tan is moisturise, moisturise, moisturise. As well as keeping your skin looking healthy and soft, this is the best way to prevent peeling as it keeps your skin hydrated. So plaster on that cream day and night to make your tan last longer.

Aloe Vera is an old favourite for soothing burns or inflamed skin. Applying directly to your sunburn will cool and help to stop peeling. Try opting for a sun lotion with this added ingredient. Garnier and Nivea, along with a variety of other brands, provide sun tan lotions which contain Aloe Vera.

This one might seem a little strange but full-fat milk does wonders for sunburn. Soak cotton wool pads in the milk and apply to your burns for around 20 minutes, this should help reduce redness and stop any stinging. You can also add whole milk to your bath so you can relax while your sunburn is being taken care of. Remember you must use whole milk as it is the fat which helps calm burns, while the lactic acid promotes healing.

Not everyone will opt for this next trick, but vinegar is great for reducing sunburn. Fill a spray bottle with half white vinegar and half water. Shake well and then spray directly onto your sunburn, be careful not to get it in your eyes otherwise you’ll be in even more pain than you started with.

Above all remember to use a high factor sun tan lotion to protect your skin from harmful rays, but if you get caught out and forget your sun cream, use these quick methods to avoid the lobster look.
