Red lips are without a doubt a bold look, but get it right and you’re on to a winning look that will take you from day to evening in a quick sweep.
Master the red lips and you’ve got a go-to look that will work through plenty of occasions, it’s something you’ll find will instantly lift your mood and your face too.
Lily Aldridge uplifted her LBD at the Spike TV’s Guy’s Choice Awards earlier this month by pairing it with a bold red pout, and thankfully she did otherwise it would have been a very drab look from the Victoria’s Secret Angel.
The best way to find a red lipstick that works for you is to try it on, head to MAC who have a great selection of shades that you’re sure to fall in love with. The make-up artists there will help make sure you get the best shade for your complexion. MAC’s Ruby Woo shade is definitely iconic, but if you can’t wear matte formulas this is one to shun.
One of the most important things when it comes to a bold lip is perfecting the lip liner, you don’t want the colour to bleed into the skin you want a bold lip that lasts all day and your lip liner will help with this.
A basic lesson in Lip Lining & Colouring
Try to balance the lip shape with lip pencils and lipstick.
Practise with light coloured pencils before dark ones.
Lip pencil colour should be in the same family as the lipstick colour unless a stronger definition and difference is desired.
Line the lips starting at the other corner of the mouth working into the centre of the mouth.
Use the correct pressure – if you are too light you will tickle or irritate yourself and it will be harder to create a line, if you press to hard, however, you will move the lips.
After the initial line is set, then shaping and designing takes place.
Thin lips
Outline just outside of the natural lip line with desired shade of lipstick. Avoid overly matter, flat shades of lip colour which can make lips look thinner. Glossy and pearl tones make lips look fuller.
Uneven lips
To balance, outline the outside edge of the thinner half of the lip – and define along the natural, ‘true’ line of the fuller half with the desired shade of lip pencil. Fill in with pencil and the selected lip colour.
Undefined lips
Create definition by drawing a ‘cupid’s bow’. Outline the top lip with desired shade of pencil, to emphasise the ‘m’. Outline the outside edge of the lower lip to make it appear fuller. Complete with favourite shade of lipstick and gloss.
Full Lips
Colour lips with foundation or concealer to make lips look thinner. Outline and define lips with pencil just inside of the natural lip line. Use an opaque shade of lipstick and top that with gloss.
Uneven coloured lips
Cover both lips with foundation or concealer as a base. Outline lips with desired shade of pencil. Apple any darker shade of lipstick and finish with a gloss.
