Every girl likes having her hair washed, cut and styled at the hairdressers, but it’s rare to get the same result when you try yourself at home the next day. Here are a few tips on how to get a professional looking blow-dry without spending your pennies.
The first step to any successful blow-dry is making sure you have the right tools. Using a hair dryer with a detachable nozzle gives you more control when drying your hair. Choose a large barrel brush to help give your hair volume. A smaller barrel brush can also come in handy when drying your fringe. It is important to have clips and a comb for sectioning your hair to make sure you concentrate on each part separately. Make sure you have a bottle of hairspray, volumising mousse or spray and serum at the ready which will hold your locks in place.
Once your hair is washed, the first thing you should do is apply your products which will act as a base before the drying starts. Apply your volumising spray or mousse throughout your hair, concentrating on the roots. Instead of applying too much mousse in one place, add a small amount to your comb and brush through your hair starting at the roots, this will allow an even coverage.
Towel dry your hair so that it is almost dry. This will reduce the amount of heat being used on your hair and together with using a heat defence spray will reduce hair damage and split ends.
Sectioning your hair is the next step to a perfect blow-dry. Using your comb, create a centre parting and then three horizontal sections across your parting to create a criss-cross effect. Use your clips to pin up the individual sections, making sure they are neat and manageable.
Now comes the blow-drying. Set your hairdryer to maximum speed, with a low heat to help protect your hair. Take down a section of your hair making sure that it is a similar size to your barrel brush.
Place the brush under your first section and dry in an upwards direction from the underneath of your hair. This will give you the necessary lift to create a volumised look.
Now do the opposite and dry your hair in a downwards direction. This will create that desired shine by smoothing out your hair cuticles to minimise those irritating fly-aways.
Getting height on your crown is important if you want a volumised look. This can be achieved by adding more tension on your hair as you run your brush upwards while blow-drying the back sections of your hair.
This next tip won’t apply to everyone but it is something that a lot of people find difficult, drying your fringe.
Lots of people battle with a cowlick, where your hair pushes further back on one side of your scalp, sometimes creating a natural parting in your fringe. The secret to stopping this is to dry your fringe fully one way, and then do the same in the other direction. Remember to direct the airflow downwards to keep your hair looking smooth.
Now for the final touches. Add a small amount of hair serum into your palm and rub it into your hands. This ensures a smooth, even application of the serum so that as you run your fingers through your hair, every section will be touched by the serum. As an optional final touch, you can apply hairspray to keep your locks in place. This is particularly advised when styling your hair with curls to keep and maintain your style for longer.
