Katie Holmes and Ultimo founder Michelle Mone were both pictured last week embracing their natural grey hair, so is the taboo about to become a trend?
Even though both women looked fabulous embracing their natural colour, some people do their best to cover up their greying hair.
Russell McGrath, award winning colourist from Michael Van Clarke Salon says: “Clients often ask me when is the right time to give in and ‘just go grey’. With icons such as Rihanna and Nicole Richie and now Katie Holmes opting for grey locks in 2013, you could embrace the trend by going natural! For some women, their natural colour is a mystery, with decades having passed since dye was first applied as a teenager!
“Going natural could save you money, with some women having to have grey roots tinted every 3-6 weeks – an expensive and time consuming maintenance routine.”
Norris Ogario, founder and Creative Director of the Ogario Hair Salon in London also commented on the grey hair trend: “When hair starts to grey it’s one of the biggest challenges for women both physically and emotionally. Women can experience a lack of confidence but also struggle with the colour and texture changes too. Grey hair is thicker, wirier, and much coarser and loses its shine. This doesn’t mean however that you can’t still have amazing hair and be proud of your silver tresses.”
Both hair experts share their tips for embracing your natural grey hair:
Russell McGrath tips
Professional hair dyes contain high amounts of protective and conditioning agents which help smooth the hair, reflect light and add moisture and protein back into the hair shaft. So don’t be surprised if the condition of your hair changes when you go grey, as the lack of pigment means less moisture. Your hair may look and feel dryer and more difficult to manage.
It’s so important to invest in professional salon prescribed homecare products and change them depending on your hair style, colour and condition. A professional range like 3 More Inches will provide nourishment to help your hair get stronger than ever, particularly useful in Winter when the colder weather shrinks your hair, making it harder to manage.
Norris Ogario tips
Invest in a great cut. Going grey is a bold statement and you need a style to match. Sharp lines and a great shape will really give your hair impact, rather than just looking unloved.
Tackle the texture. Choose products with natural emollients to help tame wiry locks. Synthetic silicones do work in the short term but can be drying over time. At Ogario, we recommend our Hydrate and Shine Shampoo and Conditioner as it’s packed with nourishing ingredients such as pro-vitamin b5, honey and marshmallow to soften and control the hair.
Bring back the shine to your hair. Grey hair is dry and if you don't feed it and keep it moisturised it will look dull. Drink plenty of water and make sure you eat a balanced diet with plenty of leafy greens. Invest in good quality hair care with super hydrating ingredients such as silk. At Ogario, we select silk protein for our products due to its ability to restore moisture, balance and form a protective barrier around the hair. Silk’s strength also helps improve its elasticity and resilience - just what grey hair needs.
Give hair a weekly moisture boost. Try our Ogario London Restore and Shine Hair Masque as this gives hair the extra hydration it needs and with the added benefit of 8 essential oils including healing sage and lavender, it will stay looking glossy and healthy.
Embrace your grey hair. Have fun and wear it with confidence. If you love it, so will everyone else.
