Pale is in, fake tan is out. Well, it is if you listen to those beauty buffs, who are now snootily telling us that tanned skin is so last season, only a WAG would be caught doing it this summer.

Oh dear. Clearly they do not know their audience, because we are a nation of tanning lovers, be it a sun bed, spray tan or laying out in those scorching rays for hours on end, until you're convinced you must now be a bronzed goddess.

We feel better and happier when we have a tan, and ironically feel healthier too because we're glowing with confidence. Providing you take the necessary steps to protect yourself while you're out in the sun, then why shouldn't you enjoy your tan?

Of course, the tangoed look made famous by WAGS a few years ago is so over now, it's laughable. Girls don't want to have a Satsuma face anymore, they want a natural looking tan.

Lathering on the brown skin dye is never going to give you that, so why not build up your colour gradually until you get the tan you want?

Since we're heading into spring, it's the perfect time to break out the gradual self-tan, as there's nothing worse than tell tale orange hands and feet a day after you've been as pale as a milk bottle.

The key to working the 'new tan' this season is to compromise with how much tan, if any that your use. Fair-skinned ladies should always approach tanning agents with caution, as these can often look way too harsh even with one coat.

A lot of the catwalks this year featured pale skin as a focal point of their collection, so naturally we'll all be curious enough to maybe give it a a go, only to abandon it almost instantly when we realise we aren't supermodels.

Even if we were to fully embrace the pale look, we couldn't keep it up all summer; what if we have a heat wave!? What do they expect us to do, stay in the shade all summer to avoid being unfashionable?

No, your best bet is to compromise and just use a lighter fake tan, so you just have a very light sunkissed look, which isn't too OTT and yet makes you feel good and confident about yourself.
