Kate Winslet

Hair Hell - We've all been there and experienced the mid-length hair rut. Where it's not long enough to do anything with, and it's not that short sexy style you had cut in months previously.

As a rule when we get to this stage all we want to do it have it all chopped off again, only to instantly regret it because we were actually trying to grow it. Nightmare!

Well, don't panic because there are plenty of mid-length hair hotties in Hollywood, who are experiencing the same hair hell as you. Kate Winslet is probably the hottest name on the planet right now and she knows how to work her shoulder-length bob to perfection.

When she first unveiled her new trim look in December she kept her locks loosely tressed and natural, but now the awards season is hotting up, she's been spotting working elegant up-do's, such as the retro beehive and elegant chignon.

Anne Hathaway too, who recently had her long hair cut into a bob is fully embracing a newer hair-do, which goes hand in hand with her new Hollywood A-list status.

At the moment she's favouring the poker straight styled look, but we think that by the Oscars, Anne will have opted for a more swept back hair-do, to showcase her new grown up look.

Katy Perry chooses to style her hair in retro curls, to complete her homage to the 1950s and it suits her down to the ground. She also recently had a fringe cut it to give her a new look.

Although these celebs do have a whole host of facilities available to them, you too can achieve a brand new look without the aid of forking out for a new style.

It's a myth that shorter hair can't be curled- or course it can, you just need to be more particular about which bits you curl and ensure that you don't end up with a too curly head of hair; we're talking to you Amy Winehouse!

Clip in hair extensions too are a great option, favoured by the likes of Lily Allen, who also recently chopped off her hair for a short bob. Provided they are put in right and styled probably, no-on will no the difference and you'll feel like a new person.

The messy up-do has long been a favourite for a quick fix, and all you need to do is update this for your hair. Start by back combing the back section of your hair, so that when you let go of it, it stands on its own.

Next, pull your side sections into a ponytail, fixing in place with some hair grips. Secure your back combed piece of hair to your ponytail, teasing it with the comb till it falls into place.

Finally, take random sections of your ponytail and twist into position into the back of your head. You should end up with a messy bun, that still looks smart and cool.

If you really want to totally change your look, then have a fringe cut in. No matter how small a change that actually is, it will have a big impact on your hair each day.

Opt for a loose, messy fringe if you want to have the option of not wearing it each day, or have a full, fat fringe cut in, so that it's very obvious each time you style your hair.
