Know what's going on in your body to help slow down ageing

The modern woman has plenty of struggles, she’s juggling travel, work, children and trying to look as youthful as possible, but if Botox isn’t something you want to consider then what options do you have?

Dr Terry Loong addressed this topic in a speech she gave at the Anti-Ageing Health and Beauty show which was held at the London Olympia.

There are plenty of different reasons why our skin accelerates in the ageing process, and it’s important we’re aware of these factors as we try to slow it down.

Internal factors include genetics, nutrition and hormonal balance. Then external factors include UV radiation, free radicals and the use of wrong products. Over animation doesn’t help much either, as we overuse the facial muscles – but it’s not like we’re going to keep our face straight all day long is it?

So, Dr Terry Loong has a new approach that helps to balance and optimise hormones, correct the past and prevent for the future.

It’s important we know what hormones we have in our bodies, what they do and how they can help with the ageing process.

Oestrogen – The Diva hormone

Maintains bone structure

Prevents break down and boosts production of collagen and elastin

Keeps your skin soft, smooth and supple

Maintains health cell renewal

Progesterone – The calming hormone

Helps with immunity

Assists oestrogen for firming the skin

Rest and repair

Reduces swelling and inflammation

Helps you sleep

Testosterone – The sexy hormone

Increases collagen and elastin

Maintains skin thickness

Helps with muscle tone

Increases cell renewal

Keeps your juices allowing for a healthy sex life

Relative high levels of testosterone can cause spots and an increase in facial hair.

Cortisol – The stress hormone

A little bit of this hormone is good for the body, but too much can be detrimental. It can help keep you focused and active but too much can inhibit collagen production.

Pre-menopause and Menopause

Reduction in cell renewal

Facial bone loss

Reduce immunity

Breakdown of hyaluronic acid

Blood vessels more sensitive

Dr Terry advises focuses using your make-up to create a central triangle in the face and pull the look of the face up with the use of blusher and earrings to draw eyes to the middle of the face.

The five fat pad compartments in the face reduces and increases with age, in the eyes and forehead we see a decrease and the jowl and chin area fat pad increase.

Dr Terry advises literally pinching your face to increase blood flow and give yourself a natural flush to the skin. She says:

“We can’t stop the ageing process but we can correct the past and prevent for the future.”
