Hairdressing giant Vidal Sassoon is leading a campaign for those left homeless by Hurricane Katrina.

The 'Hairdressers Unlocking Hope' campaign is unting hairdressers to help raise awareness and funds for the plight of those still suffering in New Orleans.

Along with Mary Rector-Gable, the found of behindthechair.com, Vidal is asking salons all over the world to get involved.

"The goal is to bring together members of the hairdressing community and their clients to reach out and help those who remain homeless or in temporarily living conditions after the 2005 hurricane season by raising funds to build new Habitat homes," said Mary to nwi.com.

The campaign was launched with a photoshot which included famous hairdressers such Oscar Blandi and Vidal himself.

The volunteers were pictured holding a key and displaying a message about the hurricane on their hands. Celebrity hairdresser Ted Gibson is seen crying with his black hands painted white and the words 'will you see me now' written across them.

At least 1,836 people lost their lives in Hurricane Katrina and in the subsequent floods in 2005, making it the deadliest US hurricane since the 1928. The storm is estimated to have been responsible for $81.2 billion in damage, making it the costliest natural disaster in US history.
