The weather may be cold and grey, but why not brighten up the day with a glowing fake tan. Avoid the Jodie Marsh glow and Lindsay Lohan streaks with these top tips to applying the perfect fake tan this January.

A fake tan is supposed to make you feel and look great, so make sure the product you use is suited to your skin. Even though pale and natural was a top look for 2008, bring in 2009 with a bronzed look that will leave everyone asking is you've been on your holidays!

With any new product make sure you perform a patch test at least 24 hours beforehand, this is a great way to judge the final colour of the tan. On the day of application, exfoliate the skin and remove any make-up, perfume and deodorant from the skin, as this will create streaks.

Before applying any fake tan, be sure to moisturise any dry area which are prone to streaks. Apply the fan tan always whilst wearing gloves, orange palms are a huge giveaway! Start on one area, such as a leg and apply in circular motions, remember that you don't need to apply lots of the product to create a exotic glow.

Don't forget to apply tan to earlobes, eyelids and back of the neck when tanning the face and always remember to tan in between fingers and toes, to avoid white patches. Leaving the product to develop overnight will create a streak-free glow.

Shower in the morning to rinse off any excess and moisturise everyday to maintain the tan. A well-applied tan should last between seven and ten days. Follow these tips for a perfect glowing look this spring!
