New research issued today by Olay Definity shows an increasing interest and importance of the eyes in overall attractiveness. Participants (aged 40-65 years, answered a list of questions relating to skincare and ageing, which aimed to determine the importance of eyes for facial beauty with a particular emphasis on the perception of signs of ageing caused by wrinkles and discolouration.

Of those polled, the majority of both males and females valued the role of eyes for overall facial attractiveness as 'extremely important' or 'very important'. Females, on average, assigned eyes higher than males and when asked which facial features showed signs of ageing most of all, respondents gave eyes a prominent role.

The survey is released to compliment a recent study by leading Anthropologist Dr Bernhard Fink who studied the role of eyes in appearance and how facial luminance can make men and women look younger, healthier and more attractive. His findings showed a strong correlation between the lack of pigmentation or brown spots on facial skin and the perception of attractiveness in women.

Dr Fink comments: "The fact, that people admire others who have beautiful eyes, probably expresses our biological obsession and the relevance of eyes in social interaction. Eyes have a prominent role in communicating a large amount of signals, which are relevant in detecting people’s intentions.

"It is then also not surprising that humans are particularly sensitive to the ‘quality’ of signals communicated by the eyes and the eye region."
