Summer Hair: The bigger the better

Summer Hair: The bigger the better

Less may well be more when it comes to make up and jewellery (depending on what look you're going for) but this season one thing that is surely the bigger the better is...hair.

From the catwalk to the highstreet it's all about the hair and my goodness have some girls got it. Celebrities are even joining in on the fun, with pint-size Cheryl Cole stepping out for the first day of the US X Factor auditions with a seriously big bonnet.

A quiff or floral headband works very well if you're going for boho chic, or a messy ponytail if you're looking for casually messy.

She claims that bigger hair makes her feel taller and therefore 'closer to heaven.' You may well laugh, but putting in a high ponytail is a great way to gain a few inches and give the impression of height, with or without heels.

So how do you achieve the seriously big hair if you struggle to get volume into your locks?

1. Use a volumising shampoo - no matter how sceptical you are about them they do work well for flat hair. Lather up nicely and rinse.

2. Use a deep conditioner. This will reduce frizz when it comes to working and styling the hair. Instead of your do just becoming a bob of split ends, this will help to give some definition to your do and hopefully bring out some wave.

3. Use a wide tooth comb when going through your hair - this evens out the hair and works so much better when it comes to adding products to the hair and getting them right through from root to tip.

4. A good volumising product is essential to apply when the hair is still wet. Patene sheer volume moose is very good and available on the highstreet. Apply well and scruch hair from tip to root and leave to settle for a couple of minutes.

5. If you prefer to use a hair dryer then use a nozzle when doing so. This protects the hair somewhat from the heat and keeps hair in waves as opposed to all over the place. Yes, it may be dry, but have you lost that all important bounce?

6. When your hair is dry and lush looking all that is needed is a good hairspray. Depending on how strong and thick your hair is you may need to go for a strong hold. Take sections from the bottom and the top of the hair, depending where needed, and add a little back comb and plenty of spray. Do this until you're satisfied. But remember to keep it big and not frizzy.

From here add whatever hair accessories you fancy. A quiff or floral headband works very well if you're going for boho chic, or a messy ponytail if you're looking for casually messy. Experiment away ladies...
