Glasses - They are a fashion accessory with a purpose and a big part of who I am.

I’m a passionate believer that finding the right pair of glasses will make you look younger and feel more confident too.

When choosing a new pair of glasses, most people pay a lot of attention to the frames but not a second thought to the lenses.Yet choosing the right lenses can greatly enhance your lifestyle and protect your eyes from the ageing effects of UV damage too.

Focus on the Lenses

First, think about your prescription:

Got a strong prescription?

Don’t worry; thick lenses can now be made into thinner ones, known as mid or high-index.

Do you have difficulty seeing near OR far away?

If so, you are probably long-sighted or short-sighted (respectively). You will need a single vision, single prescription lens to help with reading or distance vision.

Do you have difficulty seeing near AND far away?

This probably means you will need a lens that can incorporate more than the single prescription, like bi-focal or progressive lenses. I would recommend opting for progressive lenses, as they are much more flattering.

Next, think about your lifestyle:

Love sports?

Make sure you choose durable lenses made from polycarbonate to withstand impact and protect your eyes.

Always on the go?

Try variable tints, everyday lenses that automatically react to UV light, going from clear indoors to sunglass dark outside in the sun in a matter of seconds. Some variable tints such as Transitions lenses help protect from damaging UVA & UVB rays, plus they help to reduce glare and eye fatigue.

Chained to your computer?

Select lenses that will help relieve eyestrain and fatigue. Artificial lighting from your TV and computer can lead to tired eyes, but the right lenses with an anti-reflective coating can improve comfort. Your employer has a duty to provide a free eye test on request.

Do a lot of driving?

Getting a second pair of glasses with polarised lenses are great for driving. If you drive at night ask your optician for an anti-reflective coating.

Finally, identify your main concerns:

Worried about UV?

You should be! UV exposure to the eye is dangerous and the effects can be irreversible. Always ask for lenses that block 100% UV. Speak to your optician about lenses that provide optimum UV protection.

‘Bovvered’ by Reflection?

Reflection is distracting and uncomfortable, so ask for anti-reflective coating, which works wonders, giving you super sharp vision and revealing the beauty of your eyes.

On medication?

Many over the counter drugs can make your eyes more sensitive to light and UV damage, so choose lenses that provide UV and glare protection.

Nicky’s Top Tip for Lenses:

The truth is, one pair of glasses can’t do it all, but there are lenses that can offer you more than clear vision. I choose Transitions lenses because they offer me excellent visual quality, comfort and protection in one.

What’s more they’re clear indoors, but darken when you’re outside and exposed to UV rays, in seconds, blocking 100% UVA and B rays at all times. It means I can walk down the high street without having to juggle two pairs of glasses when I’m shopping up a storm.

They also help reduce glare and eye fatigue. You will squint a lot less (and we all know how ageing crows feet can be!).

This super duper technology is available in most lens designs and coatings and it’s cheaper than Botox! You're never too young to start taking care of your eyes and your skin. Prevention, my friends, is everything.
