Choose Your Frame

Do you like to blend in or stand out in a crowd? Perhaps you want more of an intellectual look or something more iconic and individual?

‘Specs Appeal’ is all about choosing frames to match your personality and your face shape.

Contrast the shape of the frame with the shape of your face. Rectangular works well for round faces, round frames for square faces. An oval face shape is the most versatile giving you more flexibility with frame choice.

Your frame size should be in scale with your face size. I have a small face, so tend to wear smaller frames.

The color should complement your skin tone. Cool complexions have blue or pink undertones, warm complexions have a yellow cast. Colors for warm skin tones: camel, khaki, gold, peach, and orange. Colors for cool skin tones: black, magenta, pink, and blue.

Opting for lenses that change colour? Make sure they match the frame too.

Select Your Look

Formal/Professional - Opt for dark thin frames - black, charcoal, or brown work best. Alternatively opt for a matt metallic finish, gold, silver or bronze, for a more modern look.

Fashionista It’s got to be designer baby! Anything elaborate or eye-catching works. Diamante and cat-eye shaped frames look great or you could just go for some serious branding. Whatever you choose bear in mind it needs to be versatile, unless you have a collection of glasses to boot.

Stand out from the crowd If you want to get noticed, go for the bespoke designs that can’t fail to grab attention. Consider choosing a 3D design.

Subtle If you don’t want your glasses to speak for you, then there are many rimless or half frame designs that are almost invisible against your face. These are best suited to lower prescriptions with thin lenses.

Chameleon You change your shoes on a regular basis so why walk around with the same specs for years? Get multiple specs so you can adapt your eye wear to your outfit.

Nicky’s Top Tips for Frames:

For women: Lenses for short sight can make eyes look smaller, so highlight them with a pale shimmery eye shadow. Line your inner lash with white pencil to really open them up.

Less is more - make sure your make-up doesn’t compete with your frames. Elaborate frames suit neutral eyes with lashings of mascara.

For Men: Baldness or receding hairlines will lengthen the face. To create balance try wider frames with a strong top line. To highlight the eyes and define your cheekbones, try frames that have detailed or distinctive brow lines. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Try on lots of frames - you’ll quickly get a sense of what’s working and what’s not. Then go away and have a coffee before making your final choice.

Ask your optician for help and mention what’s important to you: UV protection, lightweight, sturdy, convenient, flattering, practical, or, all of the above. There is something to suit everyone, even you.
