I was curious about the in-look with hair at the moment and was overjoyed when Katie Casselden, a local hairdresser, told me that I had one of them! Graduated bobs and asymmetrical styles are bang on trend this season, sported by the likes of Jesse J and Pixie Lott. These two celebrity icons incidentally have block fringes which are also the must have hair this summer.
Hairdressers get far too much bad press if you ask me as the common misconception is that it is an easy vocation. Well girls if you are thinking about training to be one, be prepared to work!
The course takes three years in total starting out as a junior at level one, where you will wash and do reception work. This can be fast tracked into your second year if you feel that this is not necessary. In your second year you begin working on dolls heads using basic cut and colours. The second half of the year you get your hands on actual clients and perform basic cuts such as one length and full head colours. This gets you used to the process. You get to try out the graduated bob and layers as well as cap colours too!
You are thoroughly prepared for running your own salon as you are taught managerial skills and health and safety. This ensures that if you do ever set up your own salon or mobile business all elements are covered. In your second year, level three, introduces the more creative elements, where symmetrical cuts and texturizing are brought into play. Making the cuts individual and colours more vibrant, as well as increasing the colours in numbers are essential to passing this grade. Slices in fringes and up dos for weddings and proms are practised as well as avant garde and catwalk styles, or those to match a given theme.
Katie admits the hardest part of the job are the complaints as customers come into the salon with a preferred stylist or ideal image of a celeb they wish to have recreated and it sometimes does not live up to their high standards. Face shapes are all different and what might suit a celeb may be totally wrong for a client’s face. Katie does however modestly admit that the criticism can only improve her technique. Katie loves being creative. She enjoys colouring and showing her own individuality in colours, cuts and styles. Having suffered from unruly curly hair myself, I was interested what she thought were the best products on the high street at the moment for not only this but also straight and fine hair. Wella Curl Refiner or TG Foxy Curls came out on top as they were the answer to getting rid of frizz which she advises to apply and twist your hair around your fingers for the best results.
If you have straight hair it’s all about Bed Head, ironic, I know but After Party smoothes your hair and keeps it straight well as giving it a glossy finish. Bed Head is also another favourite for straight haired ladies. Queen For A Day creates volume in the roots to lift the hair from the base.
Katie reveals that the secret to healthy hair is a trim every six to eight weeks, a deep conditioning treatment every week to hydrate the hair and to use a heat protection spray. Supplements such as omega 3 fish oils give it a shiny coat too!
Everyone thinks that the more you spend the better the product, but Katie champions shampoo and conditioner by Dove (Repair) which helps prevent split ends and it also has heat protection. Most importantly use a shampoo and conditioner that suits your particular type of hair!
The big faux pas is straightening without spray and sun exposure. Always use heat protection spray with your normal styling product. Without using sun spray or shampoo and conditioner with built in UV protection your hair will suffer from being dry if you are on your hols, or if it’s sunny here in Britain!
This summer the catwalk sports low and high ponytails with central and side partains and big waves are all the must have looks. As well as plaits to accompany the upcoming festival season and wet look which is easy to pull off by the pool or on the beach! For the wedding season and prom season pin curls in a bun will show off your tiara to its best effect!
Katie has her own mobile hair dressing business and is available by appointment for women’s hairdressing in the Northwich area. Anything from cuts, colours and structured up dos for special occasions.
