A new study has revealed that eating breakfast cereals for at least one meal a day can result in significant and sustained weight loss.
Forty one overweight or obese subjects were chosen to eat either a single cereal or combination of different breakfast cereals, for breakfast and lunch over a two week period, continuing with the same food for just breakfast during the next four weeks.
They were then encouraged to continue to eat and drink normally throughout the rest of the day.
At the end of just the second week, a staggering 85% of subjects had lost weight, with greater results being achieved in the group that combined several different types of cereal.
Lynne Garton, independent nutritionist said of the study: "The results of this study are very interesting and further evidence of the benefits of breakfast cereals as part of a weight management programme."
"Breakfast cereals are easy to incorporate into the diet and can contain substantial amounts of fibre, iron, folic acid and zinc as well as being low in fat. The fact that cereal is so tasty is a big bonus because people are more likely to stick to this simple dietary change."
The clinical research from Oxford Brookes University is published in the March issue of the British Nutrition Foundation’s Nutrition Bulletin.
