Drew Barrymore at the Golden Globes

Drew Barrymore at the Golden Globes

Listen up ladies, it's time to ditch those straighteners and pump up the volume to the extreme, as celebs like Drew Barrymore and Cheryl Cole are currently championing the big hair look.

There are different ways to inject volume into your locks, so if the Va-Va Voom look is not for you, then fear not because you can sample this trend as much or as little as you want.

Backcombing initially became very popular in the 60s, but that was all very styled and preened to perfection, with ample amounts of hairspray holding the style in place.

The 80s saw the invention of the done and power woman on the catwalk, which gave us messy backcombed quiffs and Madonna-esque type waves.

After the straightening revolution took over in the 90s, it's great to see that volume is finally back in fashion, as we champion the old world glamour look this summer.

Cheryl's luscious locks have been voted the best in the world many times over, but unfortunately ladies her barnett is created with the aid of hair extensions and a stylist on tap 24-7, we imagine.

You can sample a similar look yourself with a hair piece, or if you have long hair simply backcomb your hair upside down and blast with a hairdryer to get some natural oomph into your locks.

Drew's fabulous Marilyn Monroe inspired hair at the Golden Globes nearly made us cry it was that fabulous- ok, maybe not cry, but it's safe to say we were big fans of her new look!

Our guess is that she used rollers to create such a voluptuous do, and then just backcombed the roots for extra volume, giving her a gorgeous Hollywood barnett.

Then you have celebs like Duffy, who champion a 60's inspired cheeky 'ragged' look, which just creates volume at the top of the head, but still looks bang on trend.
