Backstage at David Koma

London Fashion Week was the same as always, a whirlwind that goes past  in the blink of an eye.

We've slowed it down and taken a look at the hairstyles seen at David Koma and Basso & Brooke.

ghd Creative Director, Kenna, led the styling team at the shows and he shares how we can recreate these looks.

DAVID KOMA

THE COLLECTION

David Koma’s starting inspiration for AW 2012 was elegant, yet peculiar as he mentioned he was influenced by greyhounds! The colour palette is very regal, dark colours, mixed with rich purples, navys and greens. High collars gave a strong masculine touch, with a nod to the 1960s added through minimalist curvy shapes, oversized eyelets and cut-outs.

THE HAIR

  • Dampen the hair and spray with ghd Style Heat Protect Spray to give structure.
  • Follow with a couple of pumps of ghd Style Total volume foam to add backbone to the hair.
  • Using the ghd air and a ghd Radial Natural Bristle Brush, blow dry ghd Style Smooth & Finish Serum into the ends of your hair.
  • Use a ghd tail comb to create a deep side parting. Let the wider section of hair drop slightly on the forehead, whilst pulling the thinner section of hair straight back to add severity; creating an authentic 60s look.
  • To finish the look secure the hair in a low ponytail.  Run the ghd Gold Series max stylers through the ends of the hair to achieve an extra clean pony tail, whilst creating extra Shine.
  • Spray hair with ghd Style Final Fix Hairspray to set the look.
  • As seen at David Koma, add metal accessories to add simple embellishment to the look. The shine of the metal will enhance the shine of the hair complimenting clean lines of the collection.

BASSO & BROOKE

THE COLLECTION

Basso & Brooke’s infamous prints have this season taken a turn for the oversized. There was a strong nod to the 50s but unlike the layering of pattern and print they are known for, Basso & Brooke have broken it up, literally. There was an intentional clumsiness to the collection, the oversized character of the prints was transferred into the tailoring, and we saw larger looser cuts but still sexy body skimming where it counts: in the waists of trousers and in the boldly chic blouses. More masculine and more daywear orientated, this season’s collection is for the sophisticated yet visually stimulating lady.

THE HAIR

  • Prep the hair with ghd Root Lift Spray and ghd Straight and Tame Cream, then using ghd air blow dry the hair in to a centre parting.
  • Give a little volume horizontally just above the ear with a light backcomb, and do the same under the smooth top layers at the crown for a 60s retro shape. Spray all backcombing in place with ghd Final Fix Spray.
  • Pull the hair back, leaving ears covered and let the shorter layers fall where they may, smoothing if necessary with the ghd Gold Series Mini styler.
  • Tie the hair at the nape of neck with a long piece of elastic leaving the ends hanging loose. Give the pony an extra coat of ghd Final Fix Spray to secure and twist the length of it in to a knot.
  • Secure the knot using the left over extra elastic and tie, cutting the excess elastic once in place.
  • Loop any extra ends of hair through the knot but there should be some natural stray pieces.
