Budget beauty products seem to be everywhere at the moment and with the credit crunch it couldn't come at a better time.

Mascara for a pound and lip gloss for under a fiver seems perfect but how good does it actually work? Are cheaper products just as good as their more expensive counterparts or is some stuff just worth splashing out on?

Female First hit the make up counters to find out how products up and down the price scale compare.

Today we look at eyeshadow.

Opia Eye Shadow, just £1 from Primark, is surprisingly long lasting, even through a sweaty night out! It comes in every possible colour you could imagine all with a lovely shimmery finish and a smooth texture. You couldn't ask for more for a pound and we'd happily spend about five times that much on an eyeshadow this good.

Rimmel Colour Rush Mono Eye Shadow, just £1 at Poundland, is also long lasting, the colour is nice but goes on a lot weaker than it looks in the pot so several applications are needed to build up the colour.

Boots 17 Solo Eyeshadow, £2.89 goes on easily leaving you with a lovely smooth. The three colours complement each other and blend together nicely. Great value for money as you essentially get three colours for less than a pound that can be worn together or seperately.

Bella Pierre Shimmer Powder, £11.69 comes in an amazing 105 colours so you are bound to find one to suit you. It can be mixed with water to turn it into an eyeliner or even a lipgloss. It is long lasting and lovely and glittery but personally we could think of better things to spend that much money on, like 11 different coloured Opia eyeshadows!

All of the eyeshadows were equally good so the Primark one just edges it because of it's cheap price and strong colour. You could get a different one every week and if the colour doesn't suit you, it's not too much money wasted!
