What should women be doing daily to look after their skin?
Protecting our skin from the damaging effects of UV rays is one of the most important things we can do to protect our skin and keep the signs of ageing at bay. The first step is to wear a broad spectrum sunscreen of at least Sun Protection Factor (SPF) 50 every day. The best broad-spectrum sunscreen can only block up to 55% of the damaging free radicals from UV exposure, so the second step is to use an antioxidant serum. Using an antioxidant serum for the skin along with your SPF can help provide the most advanced protection from environmental ageing. This helps prevent the visible signs of ageing and promotes optimal skin health.
I’m a great believer in using skincare products specifically suited to individual skin types as we all have such different skincare needs ranging from calming to brightening, through to clearing to hyperpigmentation. A bespoke approach to skincare is what delivers greatest skin health results.
What causes adult acne, and how should it be treated?
An increasing number of our clients suffer from breakouts on a regular basis. I think one of the triggers for acne is a hormonal imbalance, and for those in their late 20’s and 30’s who come off the pill with a view to starting a family, they can experience skin flare ups. At this age, other life-changing events are also likely to happen, like getting married and getting onto the property ladder. In their 30’s and 40’s women may be going through an important stage in their career and the stress associated with climbing the career ladder could be a contribution. As the number of women in high-powered positions is on the increase, so is the work-place stress and adult acne!
Our clients experiencing adult acne are mostly women in their 30's and 40's who have the additional concern of treating the signs of ageing and who have been struggling to find a way of addressing both of these issues.
We were delighted to launch the new SkinCeuticals Blemish and Age facial and home care programme that meets women’s combined skincare needs head on, and we have seen fantastic results with our clients suffering from serious congestion, regular breakouts or acne.
Every single client who has been on this programme has seen a marked improvement in terms of breakouts and the overall tone, texture and brightness of their skin. It is wonderful to finally have a way to treat acne so effectively whilst helping to combat signs of ageing.
Cellulite affects so many women, what tips do you have for reducing it?
We can all help improve the appearance of cellulite by drinking our 2.5 litres of water a day, keeping active, watching our diet and dry body brushing in the shower, but sometimes we need that little bit of extra help.
To reduce cellulite, it’s fundamentally all about effectively detoxing the body and stimulating circulation (and the body’s lymphatic system) to help shift toxins from the cells. At Nakedhealth we offer a unique combination of two high-tech body shaping treatments; Endermologie and Accent that complement and enhance the results of one another.
Endermologie has long been known to improve overall health but is also used as a non-surgical body contouring and skin conditioning treatment that achieves a visible improvement in body shape and skin tone and a noticeable reduction in cellulite using rollers and controlled suction. This relaxing treatment also increases blood circulation and stimulates the lymph system to remove toxins. The second step is the Accent thermotherapy body treatment which reshapes the body using radio frequency to tighten loose skin, promote healthy collagen production and contour the body’s silhouette.
With these great little tricks up our sleeve, we can wage war on the wobble and get the silhouette of our dreams in time for the summer!
Which three beauty products couldn't you live without?
SkinCeuticals B5 Hydrating Gel
Moisturised skin equals healthy, plump skin and that’s why this SkinCeuticals B5 Hydrating Gel gets my number 1 position. Containing hyaluronic acid, the body’s natural hydrator, this gel binds moisture to the skin and attracts more than 1,000 times its own weight in water. I add a few drops to my daily moisturiser to maximise its moisturising benefits.
Broad Spectrum Sunscreen
Every day without fail - in both summer and winter - I wear SkinCeuticals Ultra Facial Defence SPF50. This sunscreen has an UV filtering system that provides broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection and also acts as a great base for my make-up.
Aromatherapy Associates Deep Relax Bath & Shower Oil
This bath and shower oil is wonderfully indulgent, calming and relaxing, plus it’s amazingly moisturising for the skin. After busy days, this is my saviour!
Which one beauty treatment should all women try?
I have been in the beauty and aesthetics industry for over 30 years now and have a real passion for working with innovative technologies that are easy to use and deliver proven and tangible results for all people. The most popular treatment at Nakedhealth, the UK flagship for SkinCeuticals, is undoubtedly the SkinCeuticals facial which is custom blended to suit the individual’s skin ensuring they achieve the ultimate skin care results using this scientifically-backed range of cosmeceutical skin care. Adding a microdermabrasion treatment before the bespoke facial helps prepare the skin and allow better penetration of the products. This is the kind of facial that gets people commenting on how well you look!
Which beauty treatment could you live without?
Sunbeds. They are just so damaging and ageing to the skin. With such sophisticated self tanning products in the market, I don’t think there’s any need for them. At Nakedhealth we use the Beau Visage advanced imaging technology to analyse the skin’s health 2mm below the surface. This helps us detect UV damage and set about trying to restore the skin’s health. We are also very conscious that skin cancer is on the rise, yet is easily treated and cured if detected early. We use the MoleMate screening device to quickly scan individual moles to assess if a mole is cause for concern. Patients are quickly referred to our in-clinic doctor or medical specialist if required.
What beauty trends are you predicting for 2012?
We will see more scientific breakthroughs in the world of cosmecueticals. In particular serums for the treatment of skin issues including rosacea (redness), pigmentation and acne. This level of treatment can only be prescribed by a skin specialist and has to be monitored as to its use. Effective treatment products such as these will never be available in the same strengths at the local chemist or department store.
With non-surgical anti-ageing solutions we will see even more subtle facial fillers come to market and more people will be looking at their hands and décolletage to match their facial rejuvenation treatments.
Any new beauty treatments coming out in the New Year?
The technology with current treatments will get better. For example, laser hair removal will get faster as the spot sizes you can treat get larger.
The ability to treat the skin by mesotherapy (injecting just under the surface) to improve health will get more sophisticated.
Prescribed skin care by professionals will become more scientific with better results as products improve all the time.
Skin conditions such as rosacea will have more of a platform with better treatments.
