Get sexy eyes whatever the occasion
Mascara is every girl’s make-up staple: a quick fix to make eyes look bigger, wider and more beautiful. But when it comes to applying mascara for maximum impact, the options available and techniques that can be used are often overlooked.
Obviously everyone wants longer lashes, but do you deliberately go for a full-on, carnivalesque flutter? Or, are you aiming for barely there lashes - a big trend prediction for 2009?
If Angelina Jolie style dramatic, cat-like eyes are what you're after follow these tips from No7 Make-Up Artist and Creative Director, Lisa Eldridge. Lisa says: "Begin by positioning yourself in front of a mirror in a place where you can rest your elbow on a steady surface. Using one hand, lift up the brow firmly and with the other hand begin lining. Try to do it in one slow sweep (don't worry about it being perfect at this stage) and at the outer corners lift up and away to create the extended flick. Continue the line towards the end of the eyebrow.
"When you have finished the first eye stand back looking straight ahead to see the length and height of the flick. To replicate this perfectly on the other eye first draw a dot at the highest point as a guide.
"For an absolutely perfect finish, use a matt black powder eye shadow with a slightly damp eye lining brush. Again, look at yourself straight in the mirror and you will be able to see where it needs more work, filling in gaps, smoothing edges and extending here and there."
Twiggy’s iconic 60’s wide eyed look defined the decade’s trend for heavy eyeliner and long, defined lashes and can still be seen today on the likes of Victoria Beckham and Agyness Deyn.
Lisa advises: "Simply line your upper lid from the middle of the lashline to the outer corner, making the line progressively thicker. Then finish the line by working from the inner corner of the eye to the middle."
"Massage the brush at the roots of your lashes, then zig zag up to the tips to achieve maximum length and definition without clumps."
Cheryl Cole, Kelly Brook or Beyonce are the champions of old school glamour eyes. These modern day starlets know how to compliment smoldering eye make-up - with long, lavish, luscious lashes.
To achieve this look Lisa said: "Plastic-bristled brushes effortlessly separates and coats each lash from root to tip and the formula adds maximum length and volume for real wow factor."
"For fantastically feathery lashes, wipe off any excess from the wand and glide straight along the lashes, coating the full length. For extra curl, half close the eyes and sweep the wand through the lashes from the top side, flicking the wand as you pull it through the ends. Use the wand tip to cover the lashes at the inner corners too to create a rounded effect."
If you're looking for barely there, au natural eyes, applying a little mascara in the right way can leave your lashes looking long and pretty, but not over dramatised. Apply just to the tips of the top lashes and comb through with a clean brush to get rid of any clumps.
A different look for every occasion really is as easy as that.
