Everyone loves some volume in their hair to give it a bit of a lift, and sometimes volume shampoos just aren’t enough, that’s where backcombing comes in. Unfortunately, backcombing takes its toll on your hair, often breaking it beyond repair, and it’s a nightmare to brush out!
Backcomb in a bottle is the new way to give your hair volume without damaging your hair. We’ve chosen a cheaper brand and put it up against a more expensive one to see if you really do get what you pay for.
Save: Umberto Giannini Backcomb In A Bottle
This product promised to give instant volume without doing the damage to your hair, simply spray into hair and shape as you go. Firstly, the smell of this product was lovely and every time I moved after I had applied it, I caught the scent of the smell so I would recommend it for that alone. Unlike other products, it’s more like a hairspray and so is quite wet and a little sticky until it’s dried so your hands will get a bit grubby when applying it. Although it did give volume, it didn’t replicated exactly what backcombing can do but it was easy to use and gave a moveable hold to your hair. Plus points, it allowed for you not to have to use hairspray to hold your style. The only thing I would criticise is that it’s quite hard to brush out since it sets like hairspray, but apart from that, you can’t argue with it for £5.61. I would definitely recommend it, get yours from Boots now.

Splurge: Nicky Clarke Tease Me Instant Backcomb
This was completely different to the previous product, it was a powder so was a lot less messy and didn’t stick all over your hands. However, it was a little more difficult to apply as it wasn’t just a case of spraying and giving a little ruffle, you had to lift the hair, sprinkle in the dust and then make sure it was worked into the roots. It definitely gave a good volume and if the hair seemed to be going flat again, you just had to give it a little massage and it would fill with volume again. Plus points, it was very easy to brush out but I would criticise that it left a residue that stuck to your fingers every time you touched your hair. This product is great if you wash your hair daily, as you can wash the residue right out, but if you only wash every other day you’ll have to be prepared to live with your hair feeling a little grubby. It gives great volume and lasts all day and night.
