The hairstyles at Christian Lacroix's couture show last week almost diverted attention away from the outfits. The plaited buns, which sat on top of models heads, almost like a doughnut, looked amazing and had us all wondering how we could replicate the look at home.

Thanks to British Hairdresser of the Year, Akin Konizi from hobs salons (020 7485 7272), we can stop wondering and start creating as he explains how to emulate the Lacroix look.

Akin says: "Hot on the catwalk for spring/summer 09, the key to this look is having a long, one length hair to work with. Although this style can be achieved solely with natural hair, your hair needs to be one length to avoid layers falling out and the finished look appearing messy. Using a hair piece is perfect for giving a clean appearance and a neater, groomed end result."

"To achieve this look, begin by gathering your hair at the top of your head ensuring you keep an ultra smooth and polished base and secure into a ponytail with a non snag hair band. Taking your ponytail, wrap this around the hairband to create a bun and secure with a Kirby grip.

"To achieve the coloured weaved plait, you will need a very long hair piece which is 2 parts your own hair colour, and one part a colour of your choice, preferably something bright and colourful to follow this particular look. Divide this hair piece into three sections, ensuring one of the three sections is the coloured piece, and plait making sure to tie it tightly at the end when complete."

"Next, weave a grip through the top of the plait and push this into the base of your bun. Take the long plait and work this around the already formed bun to cover your natural hair.

"Secure the plait by placing a grip into the end, and pushing this into the base of the bun."

Finish with a spritz of hairspray and you've got the hottest style around before anybody else can try it!
