There's a reason so much emphasis is placed on eyebrows in the world of beauty: they frame your face, and can make or break any look.
While it's possible to manipulate your brows with make-up, arguably the most important aspect is how you shape them via tweezers, threading or waxing – which takes time and effort.
Brows have of course been prey to different trends over the years – but luckily we're past the Nineties/Noughties dark ages, when over-plucked brows were all the rage. And some famous faces have managed to rise above trends – or even set them – to become true eyebrow icons. Here are just a few of them…
Bond girl and current star of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills franchise, Denise Richards' look is been defined by her eyebrows. Like so many people with thick, dark brows, Richards' advice is to leave them alone. She told Into The Gloss: "For the most part I like to keep them as natural as possible and don't touch them."
Zendaya basically has the holy grail of eyebrows: with an elegant shape, they are perfectly groomed but not overdone. If you really want to make your brows pop, take a leaf out of Zendaya's book and liberally apply highlighter beneath the arch.
When model Delevingne shot to fame in the early 2010s, she practically launched our modern obsession with brows. She heralded the end of the Nineties and Noughties' ill-advised sperm brows, and all of a sudden we coveted bushy, dark eyebrows just like hers.
Delevingne told Byrdie: "When I was a kid, I used to be really ashamed of them. I was always really scared of them because they're really big. So it's really nice now, especially to inspire other girls to be comfortable with their own."
Few eyebrows are as gloriously bushy as Brooke Shields'. They've been her defining feature since coming into the public eye as a child actor in the 1970s, and she hasn't succumbed to trends by over-plucking them. Make no mistake: Shields is protective of her eyebrows, and last year sued beauty brand Charlotte Tilbury for selling an eyebrow pencil named 'Brooke S'.
Meghan's perfect brows are apparently inspired by another famous figure: Audrey Hepburn. Founder of salon Nails & Brows Sherrille Riley has done her brows and told Harper's Bazaar: "You'll notice that [Meghan's] brows are straight and archless, lifting slightly upwards towards the end of her brows. This helps to lift her eyes whilst balancing her features."
The Internet is full of guides, tips and tricks on how to get Indian actor Deepika Padukone's eyebrows. You can see why: they have a gentle arch and are dark without being too overbearing, framing her face perfectly.
Most of us fell foul of over-tweezing our brows in the Nineties and Noughties, and growing them back is truly an uphill battle. That's what makes Eva Longoria such an inspiration: she had dutifully thin brows in 2004, but managed to come back with bushy, well-shaped brows in the 2010s. There really is hope for us all.
Like her mother Lisa Bonet, actor Zoë Kravitz has seriously enviable brows. She told Elle: "I always love filling in the brow and giving it a bit of shape," â and they definitely stand out, particularly when Kravitz has her hair in a pixie crop.
Salma Hayek's thick, dark brows made her the perfect choice to play Frida Kahlo in the 2002 biopic of the artist.
