Could Kristen Stewart be the next Hollywood star to play Diana, Princess of Wales?
Deadline has said this could be the case, with the 30-year-old Twilight star set to play Diana in a movie called Spencer. The action will reportedly take place during a weekend at Sandringham, when the princess realises her marriage to Prince Charles is failing.
The casting decision has divided people on social media. Some aren't so sure Stewart's punk rock aesthetic will mesh well with Diana's classic style, but others think Stewart is up to the challenge.
It won't be the first time Diana's been portrayed on screen. Naomi Watts took on the role in 2013, and Emma Corrin is playing her in Netflix series The Crown.
On the face of it, Stewart and Diana have completely different fashion senses: one is refined and royal, the other gender-bending and grungy. However, if you dig deeper, you'll find some surprising similarities…
Both Stewart and Diana share a love of tailoring, as seen here in grey blazers. This is one of Diana's more masculine outfits – complete with a bow tie – which definitely fits Stewart's aesthetic. Plus, Stewart's light-wash mom jeans are basically carbon copies of what Diana would wear on her off-duty days.
Stewart tends to challenge expectations of traditional tailoring. In this maroon suit – worn to a screening of her film Seberg in London – she takes a classic silhouette of wide-legged trousers and a blazer, and subverts it by only doing up one button and adding white ruffled cuffs.
Diana wore plenty of suits for daytime royal visits, but definitely made sure all the buttons were done up, and preferred skirts over trousers, as seen in this maroon outfit with a peplum jacket.
Maroon appears beloved by both women. Stewart wore an embroidered jumpsuit in the colour to the 2013 Met Gala, reminiscent of one of Diana's burgundy dresses by one of her favourite designers, Catherine Walker. She wore it to the premiere of Steel Magnolias in London in 1990 and again on a visit to South Korea in 1992, and it has since been on display in various exhibitions dedicated to her style.
Kristen Stewart wore this Thom Browne – know for his experimental tailoring – gown to the Charlie's Angels premiere, and while you might not think there could be any similarities with Diana's style…
… it's a look that reminded us of a skirt suit the royal wore in 1995, in a smaller houndstooth pattern. The outfit had similar protrusions from the hips, showing just how cutting edge the Princess' style was.
For a recent Harper's Bazaar UK cover story, Stewart donned a black and white outfit by Chanel. The actor has a longstanding contract with the French fashion house, and often wears Chanel on the red carpet. Diana was also a fan of the brand, regularly wearing its classic, feminine skirt suits throughout the Eighties and Nineties.
Diana was also a fan of monochromatic looks – like this polka dot outfit, worn to the racing at Epsom in 1986.
