The Gadget Show's Pollyanna Woodward has come up with her top nine facts on batteries in a bid to get more people to recycle theirs. Now the school holidays are upon us, there is no time like the present to start recycling the batteries from well used toys this summer!
- UK households are buying 392 million batteries per year
• The average number of batteries bought by each household a year is 23*
• The top 5 devices that they are used in are Remote Controls, Games Consoles, Infant/Childrens Electronic Toys, Digital Cameras and Remote Control Vehicles
• The number of TV sets in the UK is 52.2 million, and with each set having an average of 2.6 remotes - and it each remote takes two AA batteries that's 271.4 MILLION batteries powering our TV addiction
• The first battery was created by Alessandro Volta in 1798
• All batteries, including rechargeables, eventually die. This is because the chemicals inside the battery degrade over time and with usage.
• In 2014 13,166.667 tonnes of batteries were collected for recycling (3 x the amount in 2010)
• Energizer EcoAdvanced is the world's first battery to be made from recycled batteries
