Party hosting items: You might be left with a couple of straws, a handful or serviettes and an odd number of paper cups- in which case get rid- if you enjoy big parties, the remaining stragglers from your last one won’t stretch to another.

Tech: If you were gifted some new tech for Christmas- it’s time to say adios to the old stuff by selling it or recycling it if it no longer works. You don’t need to keep decades worth of electronics- maintain a one in- one out rule and you won’t end up with boxes of wires and gadgets in your loft.

Bath products: Chances are you were gifted something for your bathroom that you don’t like. This is a staple gift for people who don’t know you that well- so if you don’t enjoy the smell of the bubble bath that was given to you or you never take a bath anyway- now is the best time to give it to someone who loves a good soak.

Excess sweets and treats: You probably have some chocolates and biscuits still lying around in the cupboards at home. If you are eating them for the sake of it now and you don’t really want them- consider taking a pack or two into work for your co-workers, or popping some in the basket for your local food bank the next time you are at the supermarket. Don’t hang onto it if you are sick of the sight of calorific goodies. There is always someone who didn’t get as much for Christmas as you did and will welcome something sweet.

Stickers: If you have children- it’s likely these have been placed all over your home. If you have been meaning to tackle these- there is no better time than now. This could also refer to stickers that are out of date in your car, sticky residue leftover from your Christmas décor or even sheets of stickers that you no longer use for crafting purposes.

Books: Specifically, your thesaurus and dictionary. You no longer need these as it’s all at your fingertips. While you are looking in this area of your home, it might be wise to seek out any books you were bought for Christmas that you will never read, books that you have read and will never re-read and books that you are halfway through but have no intention of finishing.

Handwritten notes: We are all guilty of having a few of these lying around in notebooks, on the fridge and stuffed in bags. Gather them all up from the usual haunts- if the information is important- consider digitising it and if it’s not- shred that paper and move on.
