A bad smelling home has been voted the most off-putting, even more so than one untidy, badly decorated or even dirty, according to new research.
The poll of 2,000 people goes on to reveal that over a third of those surveyed know someone who has a ‘smelly’ home and almost three quarters admit that household pongs are enough to put them off visiting someone. The worst odour-offending culprits cited are blocked drains, bins, old trainers and dogs.
With so many of us stating that nasty niffs get up our nose, it may come as a surprise that nearly three quarters of respondents wouldn’t broach the subject of domestic smells with either friends or family - noting that it would be just as difficult as telling someone they suffer from bad body odour.
Proving that we are a nation that likes to keep up with the ‘joneses,’ the research reveals that three quarters of those questioned describe themselves as house-proud, with a third relying on home fragrances to ensure their homes smell fresh, clean and welcoming.
A special emphasis is placed on scent when people are looking to sell their homes. Over half of people clean the bathroom to ensure a fresh fragrance, 50% throw open all the windows to let in fresh air and 40% plug air fresheners into every room for a wall-to-wall surround-scent.
A spokesperson for the Air Wick National Park range comments: “The desire for a fresh, clean, scented home is clearly placed high on the house-proud agenda. Equally, it can say a lot about you and can even make a valuable first impression with guests, particularly when it comes to selling a house. For a fully immersive approach, try placing fragrant pot plants by your front door, then carry the scent of the outside in by placing Air Wick National Parks air fresheners at intervals throughout your home.”
