Old toothbrushes: As it’s National Dentist’s Day, we thought we would focus on things that are related to oral health for the first three suggestions, so if you have any old toothbrushes lying around- this is a great place to start. Perhaps you need to change the head on your electric toothbrush and get rid of the old one or maybe you use them for cleaning and you have collected more than you could ever use. If this sounds familiar, reduce these down to just what you really need. Continuing with the dental theme, if you have any toothpaste that is no longer fit for requirement- try to pass it onto someone else you know will benefit from saving a few pennies on this cupboard staple. Perhaps your dentist put you onto a new brand that works better for your teeth, if so, give your old one away so it’s not lying around your bathroom.

Broken electric toothbrushes: Sometimes electric toothbrushes simply fail to work anymore and it’s a sad day when this happens but if you are holding onto to the brush and the charger in the hope that it will magically come back to life, it’s time to face up to reality and recycle it responsibly.

Dresses: As it’s National Dress Day today, dresses are another area of focus- so if you have any that don’t fit, that are beyond repair or you simply don’t like anymore, it’s time to give them to a friend, recycle the material or put it on a second hand site to sell. You might have one or many that fit this description but even a single piece is better than none at all.

Frozen Food: Perhaps you bought some unusual vegetables in the hope you would eat them on a health kick or maybe you got swept up in the fad of making smoothies but you’d rather eat cereal in the mornings. Whatever your reason for storing frozen food you will never consume is- try to purge it from your freezer today. Give it to someone you know will eat it, or defrost things like berries and give them to the birds in your garden or make a crumble and take it around to someone’s house as a gift.

Dry mixes: While you are in the kitchen, take a look at the dry mixes in your cupboard- and if you do have some cheesecake or cookie mix that hasn’t seen the light of day since you bought it- check the expiry and either chuck it out if it has exceeded it’s best before or pass it into the food bank or someone you know who would love to get their bake on.

Outdoor equipment: This is a broad category as it could refer to toys that your child has grown out of, tools you no longer use or are broken or outdoor seating that is past its best or no longer useful to you. Whatever it is that resides outside of your home and doesn’t get used, needs to find a new owner. You can do this by taking it to the tip, giving it away to people you know or by listing it to sell on somewhere like eBay or Facebook Marketplace.

RELATED: Minimalism: Minimalists aren’t cold-hearted people! Here's why...

As a self confessed minimalist, one thing I come across a lot is people who view simple livers to be cold, uncaring and non-sentimental people. This couldn’t be further from the truth, in fact all the minimalists I follow on social media wouldn’t draw in the thousands of followers they do if they were perceived to be detached or unfeeling. They are warm and approachable people who are just trying to make a positive difference in the world. While I can't speak for them all, and there will be some exceptions, here are just seven reasons why minimalists aren’t coldhearted for all those people who need to hear it... to read more click HERE
