She doesn’t judge

There are a number of other TV shows on the subject of tidying and decluttering where the host or the professionals involved are clearly disgusted by the way the person featured lives their life. Marie Kondo lights up when she enters a full home- the messier the better because she just loves to tidy so no one feels ashamed when she enters their space!

She thanks the home

After taking a tour but before doing anything in the home of her client, she takes a moment to thank the house for everything it has given the owner- shelter, comfort, warmth. Their home may not look in the best shape, but it has still served and protected those in it. Her method reminds us all to be grateful for our homes both in a full and empty state.

She is patient

Some of her clients on the show are reluctant to part with certain things, but she doesn’t seem impatient or force them to do anything they don’t want to- she is calm and methodical while the person works through their stuff both emotionally and physically.

She appears to genuinely love her job

You can see that she is one of the lucky ones who is doing something she adores every day of her life, which encourages others to aspire to do the same. She seems to be passionate about helping people and that’s refreshing.

She’s optimistic

Many people might dread tidying up and see it as a chore, but Kondo helps you to get excited about tidying. It has inspired so many people I know to improve their living spaces who wouldn’t normally enjoy such as task.

She focuses on joy

Her approach is fresh because she wants you to focus on things that bring you joy not be preoccupied with the belongings to get rid of. When you are drawn to the pieces that make you happy, the items that don’t can be easily discarded.

She promotes gratitude for your things

Before you discard any item, she asks that you thank it for the time it did serve you. This can make a person feel much easier about letting something go that they may have found initially challenging. This process not only makes you grateful for the things you are giving away but also for the things that remain because they are benefitting your life now.

She is a little ray of light and an asset to the world of tidying. If you haven’t read her books yet- have you been living under a rock? It’s time that you get your hands on a copy because they will change your life forever!
