Once your period of decluttering has come to an end and your home is filled with only the things you love and use- you might ask yourself ‘what’s next?’
With all the time you’ve freed up by not dealing with stuff- you have an opportunity to spend it more wisely. Here are just a few steps to point you in the right direction:
Reflect: Take however long you need to think about your minimalism journey. Write down or remind yourself how you were at the start of the process and how you feel now you’re at the end. How have you changed as a person? What do you prioritise now that you didn’t before? This will help you to reinforce why you chose minimalism in the first place and be mindful of the transition that has taken place in your world.
Make a list: What do you REALLY want to do? Think carefully. What lights you up? Write it down- however big or small and create your own bucket list. Divide it up into smaller and larger goals. This might not come easily to you as your thought processes need to make a significant shift- give it time and be honest with yourself.
Start with the easy wins: Pick out the easy wins- the small things you’d like to do. Highlight them if you need to. These are things you can plan for your immediate future and with little effort- so start with those first. This will keep you motivated for the bigger things to come.
Start to fill your diary: They may be easy wins- but it’s important that you do something about them now rather than later. Arrange that coffee with a friend you’ve not seen in forever, book tickets to the show you’ve wanted to see for a while or decide which book you’d like to read each month of the year and make a note in your diary to keep you on track. Act now and start enjoying the little things.
Tackle the long-term goals: For the bigger things- take a page for each and write down the steps you need to achieve that goal. If it’s a big trip- you may want to research the places you’d like to visit as part of that journey. If you want to lose weight- you could seek out a local club to help you stay motivated. If your dream is to publish a novel- you can decide when is best in your schedule to dedicate time to writing. What bad habits need to go to help you get to where you want to be?
Talk to those around you: If some of your plans involve other people- talk to them about your list and encourage them to join in the process if they are happy to oblige. They might bring up some things you haven’t considered and can offer an extra pair of hands when it comes to making a plan come together.
Think outside yourself: Try to add something to that list that benefits others. The satisfaction you will feel from helping those who need it most will be far greater than if all the experiences are for you and you alone. Can you volunteer at a local organization? If you can spare the time- seek out places in your area that need a helping hand.
