Today is National Do Something Nice Day- a day for going the extra mile for those you care about the most- or even total strangers if the mood takes you! If you know someone who’s a minimalist- here are some nice things you can do that will be right up their minimalist alley…

Accept their lifestyle: It may not align with yours and maybe something you’ve never ever considered before but accept that it works for them. Everyone is trying to live a life that makes them feel happy and fulfilled and if this is their way of doing that- cut them some slack if you tend to poke fun at them for it.

Ask about their way of life: Like anyone who has a passion for something- they will probably be willing to talk to you about their reasons behind this choice. If you are un-educated on the topic and interested in finding out more- enquire about it. Chances are they will be more than happy to spread the word.

Always ask them what they want before buying them gifts: If they are on your Christmas and birthdays lists- ask them what it is they would find the most value in each time. This saves you wasting your money on something they won’t use, and you never know- it might involve you if it’s a voucher!

Ask for their help: Most minimalists will be expert declutterers- so if there is an area of your home you feel you can’t tackle on your own- they will probably be delighted to help get your space back in order.

Ask for recommendations: If you are intent on reducing the things you own- why not ask them for their favourite sources of inspiration? Which books have they read? Which You Tube channels do they always go back to? This way- when you are apart- you can do some digging of your own.

Be considerate when deciding on the activities you do together: They might be game for a cinema trip or a coffee shop meet up- but they may not be so excited about the prospect of a day long shopping trip. Agree beforehand what you’d like to do that will cater for you both.

Avoid labels: If you are in a situation with more than the two of you avoid- ‘this is (insert name here)- the minimalist’. Just as vegans might not want to be introduced as a vegan and accountants might not want to be defined by their job- let them bring it into conversation if they want to.

Happy National Do Something Nice Day!
