Bonfire Night is not one of the most extravagant times of year as it stands. There are very few decorations in the shops to adorn your home and less fuss about this holiday than others that are on their way or have just been. With all that said, there are ways to keep it simple if you don’t want to be burdened with stuff before, during and after this date in the calendar. Here are just a few…
Watch the fireworks around you: If you don’t want to spend money on fireworks and bring boxes of them into your home, you can just as easily watch other people’s shows. It’s likely people will make an extra effort this year given that local fireworks will be cancelled so throw back your curtains, turn out the lights, snuggle up by yourself or with your loved ones and watch the night sky light up from the comfort and warmth of your own home.
Cook what you already have: If you don’t want to get sucked into buying hot dogs, jacket potatoes and chilli, simply prepare what you were planning to or cook something that fits the night- but only if you had it in the cupboards already. Whatever you cook- eat it with a view of the fireworks and any old plate of food will instantly become a Bonfire Night meal!
Watch a movie: Once you’ve had your fill of watching the fireworks, why not select a movie from a streaming service you already have that is related to Bonfire Night or that contains a memorable fireworks scene? Something like Final Destination 3 will be a good fit if you are a minimalist and horror enthusiast or perhaps Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring if you are a Tolkien fan. You don’t have to spend extra money on a movie that is new when there are plenty of seasonal ones that are just as good.
Take an evening walk: If your view is not that good from your window at home, you could wrap up warm and take a walk around your town, village or city and watch the fireworks as you get some exercise. It’s socially distant and will help with your daily exercise quota. Better than standing still in a muddy field as it will keep you warm!

Read a book next to the fire: While local restrictions might stop you from making your own bonfire in your backyard or garden, you may still want to snuggle up next to a fire. Even if yours is electric, pop it on, grab a throw and read something you’ve been meaning to start or something you are part way through and can’t wait to get back into.
Have a sweet treat: While you may not want to pile your house full of toffee apples and marshmallows, a little sweet treat you already have in the house will finish off your evening meal nicely. Perhaps some cut up apple with some toffee sauce, pieces of toffee or a slice of cake if you have some, however any other sugary indulgence will do!
Declutter: If fireworks really aren’t your thing- you could use the time to purge a few things. ‘Remember, remember the fifth of November’- the fifth day of the eleventh month- see if you can find sixteen things you no longer use or that don’t serve you anymore and declutter them from your home.
Minimalism is a tool to unlock more meaningful experiences and means of making memories so wherever you are in your home and whatever you are doing- focus on the distant pops of the fireworks, savour every colour they create if you wish, enjoy snuggling up in your space while others brave the cold- but most of all keep your night simple and be present in the moment.
Happy Bonfire Night to all the minimalists out there!
