A brand-new year is upon us and there is no better time to start your decluttering journey and be better prepared for the Spring clean when it comes around. If you want to start off small, we will be making suggestions each week for which areas of your home you might like to clear. So why not play along with us? Here are our first seven suggestions…

Minimalism on Female First

Anything that will sabotage your New Year’s Resolutions: Whatever you have committed to as your new year’s resolution- get rid of anything you know will get in your way of success. Remove any tempting foods if you want to lose weight or avoid watching one more episode of your favourite TV programme if you want to read more before bed. Spend time doing something else when you would normally go shopping if you are trying to curb your spending or reduce the number of nights you socialise to make way for some gym time. Don’t let these blockers stay in your way if you can remove them from your life.

Music: If you have any old CDs, why not trade them in? Go through your playlist on your phone and remove anything that you no longer like to listen to and if you have any records you no longer play- give them to a friend or family member, or donate them so someone else can enjoy their sound.

Unrealistic resolutions: Think about all the resolutions you have made- are they all achievable? If you know in your heart of hearts that you will never read a book a week or that you don’t have the time to go to the gym every day- change them to something that can fit in your life comfortably. If you are realistic, you are more likely to succeed in your endeavours.

Unwanted ‘noise’: This can refer to anything that creates a distraction or disturbance in your life. Silence the notifications on your phone for apps that don’t matter to you, or better yet, get rid of the app altogether. Unfollow people on social media who no longer bring any value to your life or unsubscribe to emails that you don’t want to read. This is your chance to start off with a clean digital slate- so take it!

Celebrations you don’t want to partake in: There are some celebrations that you might enjoy every year like Christmas or your birthday but if you see others as a waste of time or money, there is no reason to have them in your life. Pass on Pancake Day if your resolution is to eat healthier and celebrate your love for your partner every day rather than saving it for Valentine’s Day if you see this date as an unnecessary money-making exercise. If it doesn’t fit in with your life- you don’t have to entertain it.

Recordings on your phone: Look at all the videos you have taken in the last year- do you need them all? Chances are you have some duplicates. What about audio files? There are probably a few you can purge. Give your phone some TLC and only keep what you want to watch or listen to again.

New items you’ve never used: Look to your wardrobe- what still has the tags on? Is there a kitchen gadget that has never seen the light of day because you never took it out of its box? Be honest with yourself- if you haven’t used it so far- chances are you won’t in this upcoming year- donate it, gift it or sell it- just don’t keep it lying around!

Happy decluttering!
