As we’ve already discovered minimalism can help you in lots of areas of your life if you allow it into your world- today we are going to explore how it can help with indecision. So if you are someone who struggles with making choices, here’s how it can assist you in becoming a decision making pro.

It’s quicker to get dressed on a morning: With a capsule wardrobe or reduced closet, there are less clothes to choose from thus the excuse, ‘I have nothing to wear’ doesn’t fly because you have curated a collection for every occasion. Just make sure you keep up with your laundry or you really won’t have something to wear!

Shopping is no longer a day out: Once you take going shopping out of the equation- you no longer have to fret about which mall to meet at, what to wear, where to park or which shops to go in. Remove this one thing from your list of possible activities and so many other decisions go right in the bin with it.

What to buy is clear cut not a question: If you ask people what they want as gifts, you don’t have to browse for possible ideas, if you only shop for yourself when you NEED something- it puts an end to scrolling and having a few different options to choose from in your basket. If you head to a website or to a store knowing exactly what you want, you no longer have to sacrifice your time looking for inspiration. All of which can lead to delayed decisions.

You won’t have to ponder over something you’ve seen: The less you shop in stores, browse on sites and click on shopping links, the likelihood of you seeing something you might fancy is greatly reduced. And once spotted- an attractive item can take up a lot of thinking time. You can wave goodbye to the ‘Should I? Shouldn’t I?’ internal conversation because if you don’t see it in the first place, this back and forth won’t take place.

Experiences are more emotive than things: When someone asks you what you want for your birthday or Christmas, you are bound to ask for something faster and more enthusiastically when it comes under the question of ‘what have you always wanted to do?’ rather than ‘what can I get you so you have something to open?’

Neither over either: When certain situations provide you with an either/or scenario- minimalism allows you to give a third answer- neither. You don’t have to have something when you would really prefer to have nothing instead. So next time someone asks you if you’d prefer to receive notifications through email or text message you can politely decline both.

More focused leisure time: If you minimise your book collection to those you actually want to read, reduce the movies in your wishlist to those you really want to watch and keep only the equipment for hobbies that truly bring you joy, you will always spend your spare time doing something that makes you happy. It can be hard to find the things that inspire you when they are crowded out by those that don’t.

Happy New Year to all the minimalists and aspiring minimalists out there!
