If you enjoy decluttering, any of the following methods will fill you with joy, however, if you find the whole process a bit of a drag, here are some fun ways to help you reach your minimalism sweet spot.

Challenge 1: The 30-Day Minimalism Game: Created by none other than The Minimalists themselves- this game requires you to declutter over the course of a month. The amount of things you purge depends on the day of the month. So, for example, you get rid of one thing on day one, two things on day two and three things on day three... and so on. At the end of the month you will cleanse your space of over 500 items. For extra motivation, check out the many videos on You Tube of people who have done this and filmed the results and take pictures of the things you can getting rid of each day to reflect on just how much you’ve let go of.

Challenge 2: A Timed Declutter: If you are someone who needs a little push in the right direction, you could set a timer each day for however long suits you- five or ten minutes for example and declutter for that length of time. Take a basket around your home and put as many things into that basket as you can that immediately strike you as clutter. When you’re finished- recycle what needs to be recycled, bin what needs to be binned and bag up the stuff and take it to your local charity shop as soon as you can so you don’t get tempted to take anything back out.

Challenge 3: Donation Box: Keep a donation box in your home and tell everyone who lives there about it. When something arises that you no longer have a use for, put it in the box and once it’s full- empty it into a bag and donate it as soon as you can.

Challenge 4: Involve Others: Call upon your partner, mother or best friend- whoever is the most honest with you and ask them to help you with an area of your home of your choosing. They will tell you if an outfit looks bad on you or if they haven’t seen you use something for a while, which will help you make decisions more efficiently. Plus, they are an extra pair of hands if you have a lot of things to donate at the ends of the process.

Challenge 5: Weekly Charity Shop Drop Offs: Like putting out your recycling or trash every week, if you know that you have one day a week where you need to take a bag of things to the charity shop- make it count by filling it to the brim. You have seven days- ready, set, go!

Challenge 6: Category Declutter: If the idea of decluttering your home makes you feel overwhelmed, take it one step at a time and start with something small. For instance, begin with the challenge of sorting the drawer in your bedside table. Once that is done- move into the challenge of sorting your sock drawer. Little and often will get you the results too, but you just need to be patient. Take before and after pictures for extra motivation.

Challenge 7: The Recycling Bin: If you have a lot of paper clutter, challenge yourself to fill your recycling bin to the brim with discarded papers in readiness for each pick up. If you can fill this bin every fortnight, you will slowly and steadily minimise your paper clutter to a manageable amount.

Happy decluttering!
