The living room is most likely the place where you spend a lot of time with your family to eat meals, watch TV, talk and hang out. As it’s such a busy hub of the house, chances are it collects a lot of clutter- so here are some suggestions to reduce this stuff down to what you need.

Excess papers...

Excess papers...

DVDs- If you have a subscription service already you have no need for the physical discs anymore because everything is available at the click of a button. Detox your entertainment unit or shelves of any discs first.

Electronics- The living room contains a lot of electrical devices- TVs, game consoles, remotes and gaming pads- all of which come with cables and accessories. Work out what all of your excess cables etc belong to and if the device is in use, keep it, but if the cable is for something you no longer use or own, it’s time to purge.

Cushions- How many cushions do you use as a family? If you only use a few and the others are merely decorative and get tossed on the floor when someone sits on your couch- they serve no purpose and can go.

Toys- The living room can be a dumping ground for your children’s toys. Some they will play with and some they won’t. If you have a storage system for their toys- take them out and go through them- with your child if they are old enough- and remove anything they are no longer interested in.

Papers- Some people still subscribe to a TV guide or purchase one every week, others like to read the newspaper, book or a magazine in their living room. All of which are fine- however it’s what happens to the papers once they are read that matters. Keep a close eye on your pile of reading material and discard or donate anything that is out of date or that has been read.

Blankets and throws- If you live with someone who is always cold- your living room may have a blanket or two in it as well. Take out all your throws and check them over. If there are a couple that are past their best, you can reduce the number down to just ones that are still in good condition.

Furniture you don’t use- Perhaps you have a coffee table that never gets pulled out, an extra chair no one ever sits on or a lamp you never put on. If this is the case- you can sell these higher ticket items to make some money back on them or give them away to a good cause if you prefer.
