If men want to get lucky this Valentine’s Day they better start flexing their DIY skills as British women seek men with practical skills about any other attribute, according to new research.

In this modern age of austerity, the majority of UK women are ditching roses and romantic meals in place of getting some jobs done around the house.

A survey of 1,000 females by Spaceslide.co.uk found that a third would prefer a man to do their DIY this Valentine’s rather than buy them an expensive gift.

In fact, a spot of home improvement topped jewellery, perfume, clothes, chocolates and holidays in a poll of what women want from men on the most romantic day of the year.

Women would prefer to see their loved ones sporting a tool belt this February, rather than an apron – with only 19% stating that they’d like their man to cook a romantic mean for Valentine’s Day.

Putting up shelves, laying a patio and assembling flat pack furniture topped women’s DIY wish list, with over half of participants claiming it’s a turn-off if a bloke can’t do basic tasks.

Jon Gough from Spaceslide.co.uk, said: “In times of recession I think we all become more practical as money and luxuries becomes increasingly scare. Therefore, men who know their way around a workbench become increasingly attractive as they can work magic in a home, saving their partner money and stress.”
