A new study released today exposes the nation’s dirty washing habits, revealing that 8.7 million (that’s 1 in 7) Brits admit to wearing their underwear more than once. What’s more, it’s those of us in a couple rather than singletons that are more likely to wear the same underwear on multiple occasions, with over a third (38%) admitting to this embarrassing habit.
The research, was conducted by OnePoll and surveyed over 2,000 consumers in the UK.
Amongst other dirty habits, the study reveals it’s not just undies we wait too long to wash. Nearly a quarter of respondents (22%) wait until their clothes ‘smell’ or are ‘noticeably dirty’ before washing them.
UK dirtiest cities
The city with the dirtiest washing habits in the UK is Belfast with the highest proportion of respondents admitting to waiting to see or smell dirt before washing their clothes (36%). Belfast is followed by Cardiff (31%) as the second dirtiest city, with Norwich (30%), Brighton (29%) and Edinburgh (28%) rounding off the top five.
Least washed items
The items we wash least often are suits (42%) and jeans (32%), with one in seven (14%) leaving bed sheets for up to 4 weeks without a wash.
Women still do all the washing
The average man spends 18 days of the year doing his laundry in comparison to the average woman who spends 24 days on this chore. This can, partly, be explained by the fact that women, on average, own more clothes than men - 77 items in comparison to the average man who owns 60. However, both men and women are on a par when it comes to the percentage of their wardrobe that they actually wear, 80% of women and 78% of men wear less than half the clothes they own. Although almost half (44%) of British females admitted to only wearing a quarter of their wardrobe, compared to just over a third (36%) of British men.
