- Dear Celia, I really like a traditional dining room but I have recently bought a new contemporary flat. Do you think I can make it work or will it look out of place? The rest of my furniture is very modern from Bo Concept.
You can get away with some things, but you need to be careful here if you want continuity. You haven’t told me what it is you like about having a traditional dining room?
You could still have a traditional layout and go for a modern table and chairs and even add a couple of wing chairs either end of your table in a modern fabric?
You can also find modern takes on traditional chandeliers and modern takes on traditional furniture that could work. I would need to see the property to give you full advice.
- My son is approaching his early teens and at the moment has quite a babyish room. What sort of style is good for this age group?
Ask him if there is any particular colours or styles he likes, you may be surprised. I often ask teenagers to hunt through images either on line or in books and cut them out so that I can get an idea on a style to suit them.
Also if he has any particular interests or hobbies, it may be nice to incorporate these into his scheme.
If he isn’t really bothered then go for something quite masculine that he can grow into, such as greys and chocolates which don’t date.
- Hi Celia , We have just purchased a large Georgian house, and want to make it look good. Is it period furniture we need to put in as people always say you should not use modern furniture unless your house is modern? Thanks Sue.
Hi Sue, You haven’t told me what style of furniture you like? It is perfectly fine to furnish with contemporary furniture in a period property, in fact in a Georgian period house it can look stunning as you have such great proportions to play with. Go to town and utilize your ceiling heights to hang some really striking chandeliers.
I worked on a Georgian house recently and styled it in a very contemporary fashion for my clients and it did look absolutely amazing... enjoy!
