- Dear Celia, Please can you give me some idea as to how to make my coffee table look more designer? When I look at pictures of your work the coffee tables always look stunning, but I don’t know how you do it? At the moment I have a few books on mine and some random mags but nothing looks quite right? Sue

Hi Sue, When designing your coffee table remember to put an array of interesting items on it.

Don’t overload or pile it full of books and magazines though, a few interesting hard backs that colour co ordinate with other pieces in your room always look good.

Go for a central piece, such as an orchid in a pot, or a good sized metallic bowl, a large candle in a hurricane lamp or a large picture frame with a great black and white.

The key is to mix textures so that your table looks interesting. Remember glass, chrome, soft fabrics and leathers look stunning together.

- I have recently moved in to a new-build flat and I’m finding it hard to give it that homely feel. it is modern with white walls - any tips?

Go and get plenty of artwork, this doesn’t need to be expensive and can fit into any budget as you can go to Homesense, Ikea or similar if you don’t want to spend much, and pick up some funky canvasses.

There is nothing worse than plain walls if you want to make it homely. Another key item to making your room homely is a good cluster of cushions. co ordinate your art with your accessories to keep it looking smart!

- Hi Celia, I’ve been really struggling to find items of furniture for my house that look good but are also child friendly, as I have two mischievous toddlers walking about - what can you recommend?

Make sure your rug/carpet if possible is a synthetic fibre so that it can be cleaned easily. There are some really good products on the market that feel very similar to silk, so you don’t need to have something looking and feeling horrid just because you have kids!

Use durable fabrics such as leather for chairs or coffee tables that are easy to wipe down, and some of the new washable faux suedes for sofas and chairs.

Most manufacturers now have ranges of fabrics that are child friendly so look out for these. Good luck!
