We all want to reduce the prices of bills and now it can be in your hands to help this along.
Thinkinsulation.com is encouraging customers to review the energy efficiency of their homes after British Gas and SSE raised their energy prices.
With the other energy suppliers expected to announce changes to their tariffs too, homeowners need to take all precautions necessary to ensure that energy bills are kept to a minimum this winter.
The price increase by British Gas will see the average direct debit dual fuel customer’s annual bill rise by 6%, up by an additional £80 per year. However, the average home loses up to 25 per cent of its heat through an un-insulated roof and a further 35 per cent of heat through the walls, so one of the most effective changes is to insulate your home. A properly insulated loft can reduce your energy bills by as much as £175 per year* and insulating cavity walls can save a further £135** on your annual fuel bills.
The governments CERT scheme will run until December 2012, when it will be replaced by the Green Deal, a new energy efficiency programme launching on 28 January 2013. CERT grants for cavity wall and loft insulation will be replaced by Green Deal loans and the money loaned against energy efficiency measures will be paid back through energy bill savings, so it makes sense to claim your free grant now.
Lydia Sharples from thinkinsulation.com comments: “Price hikes are a stark reality and it’s no wonder homeowners are concerned, as the announcements come at a time when households use more energy. Although we have no control over the strength of the gas market or the price of fuel in the UK, there are changes that all homeowners can make to counter increased energy prices.”
She continues: “Ensuring your property is comprehensively insulated is one way to reduce heat loss – a simple job such as insulating a loft to the correct standards will dramatically reduce energy consumption and can save you around £175* per year on energy bills, when insulating an empty loft. Homeowners need to take advantage of the CERT scheme and low prices now.”
