As the popularity of home-grown produce continues to rise, in this exclusive video, farmer and TV presenter Jimmy Doherty reveals his top tips for any budding growers.

Following years working in the British farming industry, Jimmy imparts his farmyard wisdom for any potential farmer looking to get some tips on getting started whether it’s in a field or at the end of the garden. Some of Jimmy’s top tips include:

Dress for the weather - when your job onvolves exposure to the elements, it’s important to dress accordingly - and that means sunscreen as well as wellies and raincoats!

Prepare your soil - Whatever crop your growing, give the soil plenty of TLC with a good balance of nutrients to ensure you produce the best crops.

Buy British - Even if you’re not likely to be found ploughing fields in the near future, it’s important to support local farmers by buying British produce. Jimmy is currently working alongside Hovis to promote its 100% British Wheat* campaign, encouraging the nation to ‘Eat British Wheat’ and champion local British farmers based across the UK.

A farmer’s work is never done - There is always something that needs doing, so make sure you put the time in every day to tending your crops.

In the video Jimmy also takes a cheeky look at the farming roots of some of the nation’s favourite phrases and the meanings behind them, including: ‘Separate the wheat from the chaff’, ‘Make hay while the sun shines’ and ‘Until the cows come home’.
