A staggering 17 million Brits have taken up to two days off work waiting for their boilers and central heating systems to be fixed suring the winter months.
This equates to 34 million 'wasted' days each year.
Highlighting the severity of the problem, nine out of 10 UK homes have wrestled with central heating difficulties, with over half of respondents experiencing difficulties when turning on their heating at the start of the winter.
Chris McLain, Head of Home Energy Services at E.ON, says: “It’s astonishing that millions of people are having to take valuable time off work when they can take a few simple steps to ensure the smooth running of their central heating.”
Adopting a desperate approach, a quarter of people admitted they have or would consider taking a sick day to stay at home to let the engineers in.
Worryingly, just under half of respondents know how to safeguard their home against chilly temperatures yet 44 per cent ignore all advice and don’t test their central heating before the winter cold sets in.
Chris continues: “We understand the emotional distress caused by being without central heating and hot water and are committed to getting our customers back up and running."
High repair costs are cited as the biggest excuse for not getting their central heating fixed, followed by the time factor and concerns about letting a stranger into the home.
