Over seven in ten parents say they worried about how they would cope when their kids left for university or a job, though perhaps they didn't fret for too long.
A new poll has found that two thirds of parents admitted to planning what they would do with their child's room before they left, with a quarter turning it into a spare room and one in ten converting it into a gym or office.
11% percent start work within the first month of their child leaving home, and almost 80 percent have begun within six months.
Amee Chande, Staples UK MD, said: “We’re experiencing a tough time economically so it’s of no surprise that families are making the most of the space in their houses. Converting an occasionally used bedroom into an office or home gym can be an effective way to help avoid the need to pay for office space, expensive gym memberships or even moving to a bigger house."
Amee also offered advice to parents who are torn between preserving their kids' bedrooms and wanting more space, saying: “We often see parents in our stores looking for office furniture solutions when their children head off to university, so your child doesn’t need to worry that their bed will be replaced by a computer table or a running machine; there are smart furniture solutions out there which enable you to keep a bed for them, and make best use of the space!”
