That time of the year is almost upon is again – when everybody thinks about doing a bit of spring-cleaning and sprucing up.

The fabulous fashion guru and interior designer Hannah Sandling has given FemaleFirst some fab cleaning guidelines for you to follow around your palace.

The renowned expert has worked with the likes of Carmen Electra, Emma Bunton and Craig David to name but a few and has appeared in numerous print publications and radio and TV shows offering help to those struggling with their dwellings.

Here’s what she has to say:

Use a toothbrush to clean behind your taps

To get rid of nasty marks in the toilet, chuck a can of Coca Cola down it and leave it for two to three hours.

Pop a cinnamon stick in your hoover bag when you’re hoovering around to make your home smell lovely.

Dap some vanilla essence onto your light bulb – Lovely, delish!

If you have people coming around unexpectedly – get a little bit of furniture polish and spray it behind the radiator or use a bit of fabric softener. It gives the impression that you’ve been busy cleaning away when in fact you’ve done absolutely nothing. It will give a lovely fresh smell.

Every month – Hoover your bed. Pull your sheets off and do it because there are so many dead skins cells on there, dust mites and mite faeces. So if you get your Hoover out and use the nozzle attachment to Hoover your mattress, it will get rid of all that and keep it mite free.

Also when you get out of bed, never just put your duvet back over and go off. What you’ve got to do is let your bed breathe for about 20 minutes. Go and have a shower, because your mites love warm beds. They hate cold ones, so as soon as you open that duvet, up and out, they’re off and somewhere else.

If you dust a lampshade with a feather duster or a cloth, you push the dust further into your shade. What you do is you get a hair dryer and blast it instead.

You should Hoover your curtains every two to three weeks with a soft tassel brush attachment.

If you have grubby fingerprints on your armchair – where you put your hands - get a bit of stale bread and put it all over. It picks up the fingerprints and gets rid of a bit of the dirt.
