Almost half of British adults admitted that they can't build flat pack furniture, and one in ten revealed that they need to set a whole day aside just to build one household appliance.

Men suffer from a sense of macho pride with this, as 74 percent of them boasted that they always put up IKEA fixtures themselves, compare to just 44 percent of women. However, men's pride may be somewhat misguided, as it was revealed that four percent of men have injured themselves whilst trying to put together flat pack furniture.

The research was carried out by tradespeople recommendation website RatedPeople.com, who have just put a section on their site for anyone who wants an expert to help them with flat pack furniture. Three quarters of people surveyed said they would pay someone £25 to put their appliances together for them, while nearly one in ten said they would spend as much as £100 for help.

Tariq Dag Khan, CMO, RatedPeople.com commented: "More and more people are coming to us for help building flat pack furniture, so it seemed sensible to offer this as a new category in itself on the website, to help match our customers with the right tradesmen.

"With many young adults returning to university and college this month, undoubtedly there will be numerous visits to IKEA to help make student digs more homely. The last thing mum and dad want is more pressure and stress and configuring flat pack furniture is exactly that. Not to mention that doing-it-yourself will probably take a whole lot longer than it really should."

Three in ten people said their main complaint with putting furniture together was it taking longer than they had expected, while one in ten were confused by extra parts left over at the end.

Tariq said: "Too often there's an extra bolt or screw left unused or even missing, or the frustration after hours of work that the chest of drawers you assembled don't quite open and shut as they should. We hope that by offering this new category we'll be helping make life that little bit easier."
