Carpets are back in fashion and can make the difference between a house and a haven during the festive season

As the country gets to grip with a real economic and housing slowdown, we' re being told there is a cost effective and easy way to spruce up our house and give it a new lease of life. Many thousands of homeowners are now putting off selling their homes and instead choosing to modernise and improve, not for the benefit of a potential buyer but for themselves.

With this in mind some of the nation' s top carpet retailers have joined forces with some of the best designers in the country to highlight the practical, style and environmental benefits of carpeting your home. The smart people are telling us that just by laying down a carpet in one room of the house people can save thousands on heating bills and reduce their carbon footprint in the process.

Research carried out by Fun on the Floor also highlights the need for our homes to feel cosy and comfortable. A massive 81 percent of people questioned said that was one of the main aspects of home life. The survey also reveals more than a third of people expect to carry out some kind of home improvements before the Christmas period.

David Cormack, from the Fun on the Floor campaign, explains: "We all recognise that times are going to be tough next year, but if you' re not moving and not going out as often, we believe that people are more likely to want to give their homes a makeover then ever before. And let' s face it carpet is one of the easiest and most cost effective ways of creating a new look in your home."

Author and interior designer Danielle Proud is keen to get the nation to make the necessary improvements and believes that Fun on the Floor is a massively worthwhile campaign.

She added: "Like wallpaper a couple of years ago, it was not getting its fair share of attention. So what we are aiming to do with Fun on the Floor is to demonstrate the choice, practicality and affordability of carpet as well as the fact that carpet can transform a room. "
