Are taking part in a run this year?

Have you ever heard the phrase ‘Run like Channing Tatum is waiting for you at the finish line’?

I know I have lots of girl friends (and some guys!) who would definitely be motivated to run faster if they thought Channing would be at the finish line; and I’m sure you do too! Am I right? Haha.

Well the marathon season is fast approaching so, incase that ever happens, here are my top tips for running in style and comfort.

Picking The RIGHT Trainers

It’s so important to pick the right trainers for your activity. Each activity has a different level of impact on your body and on your joints so, for high impact activities (e.g. running or aerobics), it’s vital to wear trainers that are cushioned and specially structured to protect your joints. This will ensure that you avoid injury. I recommend investing in a good quality pair of running shoes or cross-trainers. They are suitable for all activity levels so you’ll only need one pair.

Traditional

One of the best pairs of running trainers for women are NIKE’s FREE 5.0 Fit.  They are very supportive, hard wearing, are flexible and mould around your feet. All in all, they are one of the most comfortable pairs of running trainers available.

Ultra- Lightweight

If you’re looking for something lightweight, there’s a new brand called On  (https://www.on-running.com) that is brilliant. This brand is becoming increasingly popular among athletes worldwide (including Swizerland’s Caroline Steffen, the USA’s Mary Beth Ellis, Belgium’s Frederik van Lierde, and Champion Marathon Runner, Tegla Loroupe) and I can definitely see why.

Allowing for a ‘barefoot take-off’ and a cushioned landing, these running shoes are ultra-light, and designed to provide specific support for each stage of running. Plus, to top it off, they’re stylist too. Bonus! Expect to hear a lot more about On – definitely one to watch!

I like to run wearing the On Cloudster trainers but they have several different types, each designed to help you with different types of running. So, whether you’re looking to run a marathon or jog around the block, there will be a style to suit your needs.

Finish Your Run With Step-Ups

Step-ups are fantastic for strengthening the muscles in your legs, and toning your bum, thighs and lower abs. For years, I did my step-ups using tree trunks, benches and mountain climber equipment but, over time, I found that their heights were slowly damaging my knee joints, as the inclines were quite steep. After trying several alternatives, I found that the best solution was to use a mini-stepper. As it has a similar effect but isn’t at such an angle. This makes it safer for your knee joints. My favourite is the Kettler Mini-Stepper (www.kettler.co.uk). It’s easily portable, easy to store, inexpensive and, most importantly, very effective!

Top Tip: If you don’t have time for a full workout, try doing 20 minutes on the stepper. It will tone up your lower body and will also act as cardio, meaning that you’ll burn fat.

Remember, exercise doesn’t just mean ‘red faced and sweaty.’ It can be fun and fashionable too. So next time you feel like rewarding yourself with a chocolate bar after a workout, why not treat yourself to some stylish sportswear instead. Who knows who’ll be waiting for you at the finish line!
